I’m feeling curiously mixed emotions at getting a contact from a recruiter about a position that sounds potentially interesting, because so much of me just wants to stop working for other people at this point. Unrelatedly, let me remind you my blog has a tip jar.

As it is now about five years since I wrote my "Frugal Computing" article, and meanwhile a lot of people have had occasion to misuse the term or at least misinterpret my intent, I felt it was time to revisit the concept.

The next couple of videos change things up a bit again, which again is probably not the smartest thing to do. Changing variables before you know the outcome of the previous change makes it harder to link cause and effect.

But, y'know, experimenting is fun 😁

The video embed on the website uses bunny's stream not a youtube embed. This is mostly to help me get a sense of how much video playback happens on the site versus via social media etc.

This is also now more overtly a "podcast with video" since I decided to use proper headphones for monitoring and a nicer mic

Behind the scenes I used vosk-transcriber for captions followed by a LOT of editing of the captions in gaupol/aegissub. I had been using the built-in vosk support in KDEnlive

I'm making a few more experiments in the latest newsletter/video/podcast thing, which is possibly a mistake because if you change too many variables at once, it's hard to know which one mattered

But...

I'm testing a two camera setup. The second camera is a bit grainy in this one but I mostly fixed that in the next two

The video is slightly abridged compared to the podcast and essay. Still makes the same argument, just a bit more condensed

I help maintain two separate projects for looking for LLM-generated code in open-source repositories.

slopcheck is a CLI tool I created for checking repositories for signs of slop in git histories. It also shows the last commit with no signs.

slopscore does the same thing, but it also provides a Web interface and is more comprehensive at the moment.

Both projects are maintained by teams of awesome developers. Check them out!

I wouldn't say these albums "made me", but they all had impacts on a young me. Mostly in terms of expanding my horizons in one way or another from growing up in a small town in a dusty, prickly, out of the way corner of New Mexico (yes, even the Madonna and Beastie Boys).

Beastie Boys: "Licensed to Ill"
Madonna: "I'm Breathless"[1]
Enya: "Watermark"
Yello: "Stella" (Just wild creative stuff)
The Police: "Live!"
U2: "The Joshua Tree"
Indigo Girls: "1200 Curfews"
Peter Gabriel: "Secret World Live"
Dead Can Dance: "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun"

(I'm actually not sure which Dead Can Dance to pick. Once I discovered them, I picked up as much of their catalog as I could.)

[1] I probably wouldn't have bought this for myself, but my dad won it in a raffle during a showing of the Dick Tracy movie and promptly handed the cassette to me. At the end, they included "Vogue", but my favorite on it is the duet with Mandy Patinkin: "What Can You Lose":

The software industry is becoming increasingly hostile to those who work in it. The uncertainty is affecting even those who believe in the promises of tech.
