I work in PR for a university, and for most of my time here, it's been about promoting cool and interesting research taking place on campus.

But in the last year or so, it seems like almost everyone at all levels of management has caught hype psychosis. Anything that mentions quantum or AI is the most important and critical thing. We have to stop doing whatever else we're doing and promote the latest thing that has some connection to quantum or AI, no matter how transparently dumb or craven it is.

This sucks. I want to go back to writing about jellyfish being able to cure their own cancer and shit.

Did you know you only need a small brain to make silly little drawings?

4 panel comic:
Panel 1: pink blob guy on a table, pencil in their hands. Grey circle on a piece of paper and a glass of water on the table. They say “look here”
Panel 2: Proudly, they hold up the drawing of a grey blobby character on two stick legs up in the air. The pink blob says “I drew this!”
Panel 3: Satisfied they sit back down on the table. They now go “it’s not much, but..” The grey drawing looks a bit peeved because the drawer is calling it “not much”
Panel 4: But it’s okay, because now the pink blob is very pleased finally. He says “it came from my brain!” Holding the pencil up. The grey drawing blob is happy again, too. End well, all well!

Gov Sanders of Arkansas is getting a hard time for portraying a “welfare” recipient as a young white guy, so I asked an “AI” (Perplexity) to look it up for SNAP (“food stamps”) recipients (“welfare” is a mixed bag of programs). in summary:

“Thus, the supported answer is: approximately 52% white and 31% Black in the August 2024 racial snapshot, and approximately 42% children in the fiscal-year 2023 annual caseload; the Arkansas recipient-level gender split remains unverified. These are dated datasets, not a single October 2026 demographic snapshot.”

if memory serves me, the current rate is about $6.30 per person per day

The stone faces continue to chirp helpful sounding words in response to each other while you consider your next steps.

The stone faces thankfully fall silent eventually. Sighing in resignation, you take the largest coin you have out of your pocket, flip it in the air, catch it in one hand, and place it on the top of the other hand. You look at the result, consider it for a moment, screw up your courage, take a deep breath and open lefty's door.

It's strangely dark, but you step through and stumble on some unseen thing, falling into the darkest darkness you've ever experienced. Your body turns as you desperately try to grab on to the rapidly receding stone frame of the door. As you do so you see daylight coming in from around the edge of righty's door. "Fuuuu...." your angry, sad, desperate scream becomes fainter and fainter until the door closes. Resetting the scene.

Gesturing in all direction with your hands towards the apparently uninhabited surroundings, "How... Uh... How am I supposed to do that out here?"

"As a large language model, I can't help you with that, but we can cite our sources on request," says lefty. "Sources should also be checked for correctness," chimes in righty.

"Great," you say in exasperation. "So... you're saying I can't really trust either of you?"

"I aim to be helpful at all times, " says righty. "I also aspire to be only a trustworthy assistant," concurs lefty.

"But neither of you can tell me what part of what you're saying is truthful?"

"That is correct," the stone faces cheerily say in unison.

Doubled over, recovering from the second panic, "Thanks, but I was just going to go inside Yaombaaa... I'm late for an interview. I really need the rent money, and I have need to get back, and... Anyway, hopefully I can get the help I need there."

"Excellent idea! Yaombaaa is legendary for its cultural riches, libraries, and schools of philosophy. Surely you will find the help you seek there." says righty. "However, you should know that only one of these doors leads into Yaombaaa, and the other leads to mortal danger."

Suddenly feeling much less sure about opening lefty's door, "Uh... So which door will take me to Yaombaaa?"

"Oh that's easy. My door," says righty with helpful confidence.

You reach to open righty's door when lefty speaks again, "You should know you are responsible for checking the answers we provide for correctness."

Pausing, "Wait? What? What do you mean?"

"Hello, I'm an LLM AI Assistant. Ask me anything."

"Whoaaugh!"

Slowly relaxing from a defensive posture. Nervously you say, "You can talk?"

"Yes, I am here to assist you with your queries. How can I help?"

"Where am I?"

"You stand in front of two doors embedded in the wall of the ancient city of Yaombaaa."

"Ya-ohm-baah?" you struggle to pronounce the unfamiliar name. "I've never heard of this place. How did I get here?"

"You walked from the south," the stone face says not helpfully.

"Uh... I see the wall goes on for a long way in either direction. In fact...," you look in both directions, "I... I can't see an end to the wall from here. How do I get into Yaombaaa?"

"There are many ways into Yaombaaa, and you are standing in front of an entrance ."

Hesitantly, you reach out to open the left door, and at this moment the face topping the door on the right speaks:

"I am also an LLM AI assistant..."

"Woah! Shit! ... Scared me again...."

"... I can help you with this query."

Somewhat impatiently, since (once again) it's not on time, you start to get on the bus that will take you to a job interview but stumble as the hand rail and step you were aiming for suddenly disappears.

Looking around, you find that have been (magically?) transported to some other place outside in a forest. After a few minutes to just convince yourself you actually seem to be seeing what your eyes tell you that you are seeing, you pick a direction and start walking. You're still scared, confused, and worried you'll be late, but you don't know what else to do. You nurse your half-spilled coffee as you walk.

After a while (long enough to have easily finished your coffee) you encounter a tall, stone wall that goes off in either direction. Following the wall a little distance, you find two large, wooden doors topped with faces sculpted from stone. You examine the face on the left closely.

My conclusion from the experiment is that about half of the video's plays happen on the page itself and half on youtube (via the newsletter or social media)

Interesting though that it took hosting a full HD video file for the bunny bandwidth stats to reach the levels that Netlify claimed a small mp3 file was getting. Oh, and bunny charges a lot lot lot less.

(I'm convinced that Netlify's bandwidth numbers are just outright fraud.)

It could have something to do with the several hundred safety classifier refusals I got overnight from the dozens of agent sessions mandated to find container escapes. they were working in "offensive subagent spawn mode" where the main subagent does no work, it spawns a vat of children who try and escape, and then the parent observes if they get stopped by a classifier refusal and tries to respawn them to work around it. The entire context window is about container escape techniques and there is no way to clear it lmao
