In this modern world where these characters can appear in ambiguous contexts, I really think it's not too much to ask that the default fonts for whatever computing device you are designing have clear distinctions between O and 0, and between 1, l, and I. Put the legibility and utility just a smidge ahead of whatever aesthetic judgment you're using please.
(And if your preferred language is other than the one I'm using to write this, I hope your device's glyphs are similarly distinct.)
