My first salaried job was at an architecture firm in New Haven. My boss—one of the best bosses I’ve ever had—emigrated to the US from China with basically just the clothes on his back. He studied at City College and then worked for KPF in New York before moving to Connecticut and opening his own office. I shared a desk with him. We faced each other. Early on, I remember him looking up at me and saying: “Always remember, design is a service profession.” That has stuck with me. Grateful to him.
