as I slog through several new APIs that I don't particularly want to learn, along with massive piles of feature complexity, I glance over at the Stripe docs to see if maaaaybe things have gotten more relaxed, but nope, the state machine from "unpaid" only has three edges, one that goes to "customer paid it through stripe" and two others that go to "voided" or "uncollectible" https://docs.stripe.com/invoicing/overview
