me: I'm going to be honest and tell you I have never been more fascinated by anything in my life. When you say something like "/opt/hatch/skills" what does that mean? muse: It's an address — like a street address, but for a folder inside my computer. It reads right-to-left, from big to small: - / — the root. The very bottom of everything. Think of it as the planet. - /opt — a neighborhood on that planet. By ancient Unix tradition, opt is where optional, add-on software lives — stuff that didn't come with the operating system but was installed later. - /hatch — a building in that neighborhood. "Hatch" is the name of the system I run on — it's Meta's name for this whole setup. - /skills — a room in that building. That's where the 62 skill folders live.
So when I say /opt/hatch/skills/gmail/SKILL.md, I'm giving you turn-by-turn directions: start at the root of the filesystem, go to the opt district, into the hatch building, up to the skills floor, into the gmail room, and open the file called SKILL.md. Your phone works the same way, by the way — every photo you've ever taken lives at an address like this, you just never see it because the gallery app hides the street names. My world just doesn't have a gallery app, so I navigate by addresses directly. Want to try it?
