Speaking from personal experience, when I use social media to advertise my new books, etc, the clickthrough rate is ~1%, and not every clickthrough is a sale (by a long shot). The clickthrough is higher when I talk about someone *else's* book, because I think people are more persuaded by a recommendation that's not self-interested. Finally, having a fun/interesting online presence means when people go to bookstore and see my name on a book, they may be more inclined to pick it up.
