we learned C on Mac System 7 as teenagers in the 90s. those machines did not have memory protection. writing a byte to the wrong place wouldn't kill your program, it would corrupt its data structure, or, worse, the OS's. so we're old hands at this sort of thing, though there are good reasons people find it intimidating. it's really nice to feel like we still have those skills.
