Third, for _most_ of the people who say this to me (direct coworkers excluded) I'm a *prominent* programmer, not necessarily a *good* one. You know about me because of my nano-celebrity status in the history of the development of modern async interaction patterns. There are lots of "better" programmers out there that just toil in obscurity. This is not a profession where quality (multivariate and complex as it is) corresponds to notoriety.
This goes double for Rob Pike or Linus Torvalds.
