as you can see it's considerably simpler than a finger tree, having only two types. it's asymptotically terrible compared to the finger tree, because at each level it's only branching up to 8 ways. it's also much simpler - a uniform type with no tedium about depth. but i don't really care about the asymptotics for large lists, i want to skip over some items in a smallish list faster. and this scheme is simple enough i have a hope of doing a dependent version.
