as a former whistleblower (our main focus was labor organizing but we also relied on whistleblower law in a few small ways), the company's attitude in that story sounds familiar to us
it comes off to us as (pastiche) "if we did anything wrong it was by accident and it's your fault for caring. you can't prove we knew about it and you can't make us change it."
