Folks on Fedi talk about "degrowth", and usually they are talking about materialistic production. But this is just as much a part of that - when taking back infrastructure into communal hands, we're all also going to have to rethink our expectations. What 'performance' is actually reasonable to expect from our fellow creatures?
We can't do degrowth without rethinking our assumptions about how the world works, and who are doing its labour under what circumstances. And it may be less obvious, but that applies to communal infrastructure too. It is simply not sustainable to expect the same kind of uptime as from a tech company with infinite budget. You can certainly volunteer and *strive* for that sort of uptime, but that's because then you are the one doing the labour.
So, more bluntly: the tech folks among us are going to have to learn to live without that technical and aesthetic perfection of 100% uptime. It was never sustainable, the only reason it looked like it for a bit were huge bags of money, and it never *will* be sustainable. You'll have to figure out how to do your thing in such a way that the occasional downtime isn't a problem. The same way folks did only 20 years ago.
