For a maintainer, I believe that the defense is knowing this can happen, having sharp reasons for doing what you do *and being prepared* to fall back on those reasons for support when needed, to be proficient in de-escalation, and to both be ready to assume good faith when appropriate and to know when your assumption of good faith is going to be weaponized against you. Good faith is both necessary and a weakness that will be exploited, both can be true.
