Novels got longer when the chain bookstores started being a thing in the 80s, because hardcovers of 300 or so pages look good on bookshelves. Also, these days 200 page books exist in the form of novellas, which have taken off in the last decade (see: the Murderbot series) after decades of publishing dormancy.
