anyway we had to do a thing with PDF editing just now and wow is free software PDF tooling a wild ride. there's dozens of applications and CLI tools that each did the hard part of different subtasks, and none that have done the tedious part.
we sympathize, we've also done the hard part of messing with PDF internals in the murky past...
