mastodon really needs to make "whose replies are you in right now" more visible in the UI. I suspect that the lack of a sense of *place* in social media is a big reason why people unintentionally participate in dog-piling and harassment; posting a reply, which should be viewed as being a guest in someone's mentions, is presented almost exactly the same as top-level posting, which should be viewed as standing on your own private stage
