following general principles, we backed out to the prior fully-submitted commit and did the renamings atop that, so that we can have a commit that's just renaming and is easy to read through...
it was quite a time-consuming process. lots of filenames referenced in comments that needed to be updated, and things like that. almost ready now, just validating it.
