The Bank of England is cutting coal from its collateral. From October 2026, the central bank will stop accepting bonds linked to thermal coal as security against its loans to commercial banks, a step stricter than the European Central Bank’s. Campaigners hope it nudges lenders like Barclays and HSBC to reconsider holding coal-linked assets at all.
