Another potential origin point for fandom i could see the argument for is the mid-to-late 19th century. That's where you have phenomenons like Lisztomania (arguably the precursor to stans), Janeites (Jane Austen fans) and the Sherlock Holmes fandom. We still use terms from the latter such as "canon" or watsonian vs doylist when discussing fandom, so clearly there's still something of a lineage there.
