106 years ago today, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, adding to the US Constitution the guarantee that the right of citizens to vote "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

That victory took 72 years, from Seneca Falls in 1848 to Nashville in 1920. Generations of women fought for it, joined by men who lent their votes and voices as allies; many of those women did not live to cast a ballot.
