maybe this is very 'grew up in and always lived in bike culture of the PNW of me' but i see people's bikes as being something like their familiars, where the state of what someone is riding is like one of the things you check up on with old friends or ask about when visiting - how the bike they were riding when you knew each other is holding up, or if they're on something new. their fundamental companion to space and interacting with the city. i know some people feel the same about cars but i just sort of don't, unless they have done something special to it a car is a car
