Allow me to point all y'all to the devastatingly negative review of Redshirts in Kirkus, which calls the novel "sophomoric" and concludes "Check the date. If it isn't April 1st, you've been had."
Anyway, the book was a New York Times best seller, got shouted out by Tom Hanks on social media, won the Hugo and Locus Awards for Best Novel, and has been optioned multiple times for film/TV.
So, yeah, don't sweat the bad reviews.
