This may not surprise anyone on Fedi to hear, but I get hateful messages sometimes. Sometimes for valid reasons, even.
I don't consider criticism hateful. Being told someone hopes I die of AIDS is hateful. Being told I'm going to burn in hell is hateful. Being told I deserve bad things happen, etc.
But the thing is, growing up with the early Internet, this isn't really a new phenomenon for me, y'know?
I don't think I recall a single moment of Internet usage before people expressed such sentiments towards me.
And, sure, "who cares?" is a valid thing to think about shitty people.
But,
I can't help but wonder where any of those people are today.
Do they still draw breath?
Do they still harbor such anger or contempt for me today? Despite all the years?
How many of them matured into kinder people? How many of them are I friends with now, neither of us knowing we crossed paths the years before?
How many of them choked on their own vile hatred years ago, and are no longer among the living?
