Mastodon is great and all, but if you want Fedi to be more than just one dominant server, I urge you to consider financially supporting GoToSocial, a lightweight ActivityPub software.

@gotosocial is halfway to their modest funding goal. Developing open source software is labor and deserves to be funded. Even if you don't use GoToSocial, I cannot overstate how important it is to fund projects like this which advance the protocol we all use. Even a buck a month is helpful.

i've come to the following conclusion:

i don't think people spend too much time online. i think the problem is what they spend that time doing. "online" is extremely vague: when i talk to my friends, i'm spending time online; when i watch a video, i'm spending time online; when i read about stuff, i'm spending time online. but also when people spend hours searching out arguments, that's spending time online, too; not all time spent online is equal

I used to train for code beginner meetups and OpenTechSchool. Common wisdom was that even for experienced coaches, it is hard to put themselves into the shoes of someone who knows _zero_. We usually gauged that most people effortlessly could drop down to "6 month in" (you know what a text editor is, you know the terminal exists), everything below is active active effort that requires to desire to be there.

Realisation of that problem is key to every teaching effort.
