It's worrying how often online banking apps here in Iceland just plain don't work:

Notification of an unpaid bill pops up.
You click it and pay the bill.
Then, since you're in the app, you check your balance and you notice the bill payment hasn't gone out.
Go check the unpaid bills section: no bill there
Check the balance again: no payment
Check the unpaid bills section: the bill now appears as if it were unpaid

Now you have to decide whether to try to pay the bill again and risk paying double

You know how there are weird tricks with computer stuff that you think everyone knows but they don't? I live learning and teaching new things like those when they come up.

Today's was the carat substitution in bash. It probably works in other shells too but IDK, I'm too old to learn a new shell.

The way it works is fairly similar to the / in sed or similar. You can use them to run the previous command but with a string substitution.

For example, let's say I entered this command:

dig A cascadiacrow.org

When it fails to resolve, I realize it was a .com domain. Rather than retyping the command, or hitting the up arrow to change the previous command, you could do this:

^org^com^

And it would run:

dig A cascadiacrow.com

Kind of cool with those one liners you spend way too much time on and find a typo.

Anyway, I used it and someone thought it was magic so if it's new to you too, happy Monday.

Can you make a difference in the world by going out, finding a place where you could sit for a while, and talking to people about the human problems they were struggling with, and then using the skills you have to try to tell that story and make it more legible to the world and to the people who could help?

I thought so years ago when I decided to self-fund an interview study where I listened to developers talk about why they felt unseen and undersupported as learners.

Managed to find a scientific study on social media I wanted without DuckDuckFedi; I did a search for Ars Technica for "social media" until I found the results. Again, "normal" search engines were useless.

It's deeply weird how hard it is to find anything on normal search engines and instead I need to go to individual sites, or failing that, actually talk to people. Feels like I've gone to the pre-Google era or finding stuff on the Internet

You end up with three-digit numbers of containers way faster than you can afford three ppl only making sure they’re running (outside of VC nonsense). It remains to be proven that reimplementing (and operating) a container orchestrator is measurably simpler than learning the thing everyone uses.

Not to speak of a supplier letting you know that future releases of a critical piece of software are only distributed as Helm files.

It's regarding an asylum claim that has been certified under section 94 and has no right to appeal.
The claim does not appear to have considered the consequences of the removal of the spouse in this case despite sufficient evidence being provided. It also appears to be in violation of a British citizen's human rights (or no merit has been paid to them).

Please contact me if you have any information that could help, or know anyone who could help.

I'm not eligible for legal aid or fee waivers and we cannot afford legal advice.
