Where the rage bait has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If I'm having an ADHD flare up I should try designing out that ADHD simulator I've been meaning to make so that when my meds finally get sorted I can actually make it.

Right now it feels like there is a layer of treacle/fuzz that sits between most things I want to do but doesn't sit in front of more impulsive actions. (Think, le doomscrolling and to a lesser extent some of the stuff I do with Strudel). Getting anything done either means invoking the anxiety/willpower/deadlines or tricking the impulsive part of the brain that doing the boring thing is worth it.

I kinda imagine it to be a visual novel where invoking choices has an energy cost that varies on the kind of choice and you have to balance making the right choices with all of the sodding energy costs. Meanwhile everyone around you is like "why can't you do basic tasks?????" because they're not having to deal with cost/choice balances.

I was wondering about using UI fuckery to simulate ADHD (e.g. making it literally harder to control the more impulsive choices) but that might be more frustrating than fun.

Anyway you are free to steal my idea (but not put it through an LLM) as the timeline for getting this thing made is basically "lol I have ADHD".

@soatok I got put on a deferral list for Red Cross because I admitted to doing gay things (this was pre-transition) and was told later on (after they apparently changed their mind on that whole anti-gay thing, not sure if they changed back or something) I could get taken off if I called and I don't have the spoons to undo something that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Shame because donated blood genuinely saved my life in 2014 but bigotry means I was never allowed to pay that back in kind.

Hand-drawn comic with four panels. In the first panel, a TV shows an injured person being helped toward a hospital, with the caption, “C’mon, the nearest hospital is a 20-minute walk!”. In the second, a dark-haired character screams to the TV: “He can barely stand, dude. Just call an ambulance!”. A blond character with a US-themed shirt stares at her. In the third panel, the blond character replies with concern: “And pay 1000 dollars for a ride?!”. In the final panel, the dark-haired character hugs him and whispers, “Shhh... it’s ok. We are in Europe,” leaving the blond person visibly stunned. Watermark below the comic reads “Linguist Gone Foreign ©.”

Because people are already being annoying about this: it’s obviously not notable when somebody who dislikes using LLM tools and worries about the impact of “AI” complains and ponders leaving the industry.

It is notable when people who think the tools are useful and have no moral objection to them also express the desire to leave industry. Obviously not as common but also obviously more notable.

made some decisions on littlegem today:

there will (probably) be a Heap<T> type for refcounted heap references in the vein of smart pointers. the compiler will insert refcount operations as appropriate in the style of koka's perceus (albeit likely with a modified algorithm), meaning it can compile without need of a large support library while having something akin to garbage collection (no cycle busting).

the default mode will thus be unboxed and if you want heap things, you can have them with the smart pointer and the integrated compiler support. there can of course be other types of smart pointer and this gives us a way both to flatten nested structs into a single allocation and a natural place to plug in raw pointers or such for use in unsafe code later.
Heap<T> does make you think about whether it should be on the heap or not, but that's about it, the compiler does most of the work

i think we are going to end up with more powerful types than i was thinking yesterday. possibly ones i will have to learn how to implement 😅 i just don't think i'd have it any other way. i will make sure the simple case is simple of course.

@Popsip @soatok The real reason is the new Reddit has more tracking, and more dark patterns like endless scroll designed to steal your attention. Also on mobile browsers, new Reddit will constantly spam you to use their app (which has even more tracking)

They’re trying to position themselves as a broker of human generated text content. Scraping cuts into their business model, and automated posting devalues what they’re selling to the AI companies.

So basically, they’re enshittifying their platform because their real customers are the AI firms. Their users are not the customers. They don’t care if “high quality” posters leave, because the real value is the organic conversations in the comments.
