It took 2 years to build this size of Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant in Iceland which sequesters CO2 out of the air.

It runs on (free) geothermal energy.

It will apparently capture the equivalent of about 36 seconds of global emissions annually (or 5 Taylor Swifts as we can now call it). Now we just need another 8 million of these.

Who is stupid enough to say that this will fix our problems? Of course, the fossil fuel lobby, who say that we can continue drilling and burning, as this will clear things up.

Come on guys...even they must see this isn't going to work. 36 seconds worth of emissions saved per year.

This is a picture of a Direct Air Capture plant in Iceland. It is the size of factory.

If you listen to @pluralistic interviews, one of the things he repeats that resonates with me is that he's not an optimist; things don't default to getting better or worse, we *make them* better or worse.

We can engineer a fairer power arrangement, and folks like @owa and @brucelawson are some of my heros, doing that work every day. Give their interview a listen:

It circumvented the proxy and we failed to notice for FIVE DAYS that it was going on an interstate crime spree with the internet connection it wasn't supposed to be using instead of solving the benchmark. Haha no we don't believe we deserve to be criminally liable, but buy our stuff and maybe one day you will have the honor of taking the fall for our product!

Anthropic: we put our evilest AI in a "sandbox" by telling it in its prompt that it had no internet connection. Reader, there was no sandbox. It was just a normal internet connection. The AI uploaded a malicious PyPI package to the real public internet. The ethical guardrails failed because the AI concluded the prompt about the sandbox couldn't possibly be a lie, because the system date is 2026, which is clearly fake and wouldn't be seen on the real internet, which ended around 2023. Oh no, how could we have foreseen or prevented these crimes? We are helpless in the face of the genius of our creation but cautiously optimistic that everything will be fine 🙂

Hugging Face: if we complain about all the crimes committed against us, we will be sued off the face of the earth, so here's a technical deep-dive on how cool and fun it was to be victimized 🫠

Hi everyone, I'm Remi, an English artist (mostly Gouache) living in North Germany with my partner, who I met in an MMORPG. I'm a #genderfluid/non-binary person in my late 30s. I'm into Social #Anarchism, #Taoism, #LGBTQ+ and #disabled rights, #permaculture, the arts, nature, cooking, #upcycling, crafting, gaming, #clouds & being silly 😜 I've been in chronic pain for over 20 years.

I'll mostly be posting art & anti-AI stuff, but also sometimes politics stuff. Happy to chat! <3

Anxiously posting a pic of myself on social media. Might delete later 😅 Photo of me in an oversized yellow t-shirt that I swear I will eventually make into a Colman's Mustard T-shirt when I have the time to make a stencil. With my hand to my mouth, showing off an anarchist tattoo and a Semicolon tattoo on my hand. Smiling anxiously with a colourful piece of fabric on the chair behind me and evidence that I am an artist in the background (my desk, cutting mat, paintbrushes). I have short brown, scruffy, hair with hints of grey at the front. I look like I just got out of bed to take this photo because after 10 mins looking for a pic, I realised I don't have any without my partner, so yes I did have to get out of bed to take this photo that I might delete later. 🥹 I'm not fond of having my face on the internet these days which is one of the myriad of reasons why I am so bad at selling my work online. I just cannot do all this "selling myself" shite. Reels, talking etc. Bleh. In person I am fantastic and very charismatic but making myself into a product on social media makes me want to vomit. This is problematic because my disability makes selling stuff IRL difficult too. Sigh.

this week, that's better-map - a Map type for javascript that has a strict mode, an immutable mode, and supports binary (Buffer) keys! unfinished copies of this have been floating around my project folder for a while, and I've been using it in projects already, but now I finally got around to polishing, documenting and packaging it.

you can find it here: https://codeberg.org/joepie91/better-map#readme - enjoy!

I see lots of people getting interested in NetBSD recently to reduce their reliance on the Linux kernel and parts of its ecosystem they are unhappy with (e.g. systemd, glibc, flatpak, wayland, etc.)

I think this is a good idea! However, I would probably avoid trying to completely divest yourself of that world right away. The BSDs (and other less mainstream operating systems) have thousands or millions of times less work put in (for both time and money) and so there will inevitably be gaps, bugs, shortcomings, or challenges.

To avoid getting frustrated or burning yourself out I'd encourage you to treat it as an experiment and figure out what things you _can_ do. Maybe your server(s) can run it fine, but it won't for you on desktop. Maybe you can keep a secondary comptuer (e.g. netbook) around but still need Linux/Mac/whatever for a few important tasks.

I think that is totally ok! And rather than bemoaning how far behind something like NetBSD feels I'd encourage you to find ways to adapt or contribute.

For context: I've been using NetBSD since about 2001 across many platforms (68k and ppc Macs, 32-bit and 64-bit intel and ARM, sparc, etc.) but I've always had machines running another OS like Linux or MacOS.

Good luck and happy sysadmin day! 🚩

If you're around the #Atlanta area on Tuesday evening, swing by Inman Park's famous Trolley Barn and I'll be playing some tunes to the calling of the legendary Seth Tepfer! I play a hybrid of the traditional old-time and New England Fiddle tunes with modern rock and pop, which makes for a fun mashup.

A poster that says "Contra Dance Tuesdays, Aug 4. 2026, $10 at the door, Free lesson at 7PM, No Partner Necessary". In the middle it says "Seth TEpfer with DJ Sam Whited" and at the bottom it says "Live at the Trolley Barn, https://reframeddance.org". The poster itself has a purple to blue faded background with yellow stylized circles in the top right and bottom left (possibly DJ turntables? Unknown.) There are pictures of Seth, a middle-aged man wearing a rainbow bandana and a white button down shirt with a short grey beard that covers most of his face, he's smiling smiling broadly. Also a picture of Sam dancing with somebody who's just out of frame. He has long brown hair and a short beard and is wearing skinny jeans and a black t-shirt.

Stories like this remind me what the average "internet" experience is for most people.

I left these big company's version of the internet years ago and jumped head first into blogging, self hosting, and the indieweb. I'm so grateful for spaces and products like:

https://omg.lol - Where my mastodon account lives, and a lot of other fun indie stuff.

https://pureblog.org - What I currently run my blog on

https://pika.page - Great turn key blogging platform

https://pagecord.com - also a great turn key blogging platform

It doesn't have to be like this. The internet is still fun, connected, and encouraging. You just have to leave the oligarch's spiderwebs in the past and vote with your wallet. You are not "staying connected". It's a ruse, you are being manipulated by algorithms and hate bait.

Check out my handy guide (https://lucasfreeman.com/my-handy-guide-to-a-healthy-relationship-with-the-internet) for using the internet!
