“The Gargantuan Lie That is Collapsing The World’s Climate”

> This massive lie can best be summed up as “when it comes to climate change... we have more time.”

This is actually the main reason I'm so angry about the "AI" bubble. All this enormous effort could have been spent combatting the climate crisis and the opportunity cost of your fucking chatbot is going to be the very climate we live in

Imagine what we could have done with those 3 trillion dollars (or so)?

Did a study dive last night and found some stuff which really resonated:

  • https://bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bjdp.12350 - autistic people commonly expetience "thwarted belonging" which can have a significant impact on mental health (FWIW I experience this a lot and come to think of it it's a big factor in my mental health issues). Neurotypical people only experience this very rarely! Camouflaging can also make this experience worse and more autism traits leads to more camouflaging. Plus, more socially motivated autistic people (again, myself, despite my isolation I am not particularly introverted, I just have social difficulties) are more likely to have these difficulties.
  • https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13623613211067928 - calls out the social reflex to treat autism as a series of deficiencies within one's own head and address the environmental factors determining mental health.
  • https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s40337-026-01558-1 - points out that CBT acts from a white neurotypical conceptualisation of eating disorders and different groups have different reasons for feeling distressed and showing symptoms (e.g. for autism, the role of sensory sensitivities, for Indigenous communities, the role of colonial trauma). Furthermore, in an attempt to make CBT evidence-based, CBT trials will throw out anyone who "doesn't fit" which results in a skewed population. As a result CBT is not a universal therapy and can cause harm when misapplied (something I have personally experienced).

From https://link.springer.com/article/10.1140/epjc/s10052-025-14844-0, it sounds [to me, a simple country astronomer] like the story is:

- normally, IceCube detects very high energy cosmic rays that hit something in the Earth's atmosphere and then shower to the ground/ice/detector.
- during these air showers, there is a competition between particles decaying vs hitting an air molecule
- if it hits an air molecule, some of the energy goes there and isn't detected in neutrinos
- chances of hitting an air molecule depends on atmospheric air temperature and pressure
- Earth's axis is tilted enough that there is still plenty of seasonal variation at the south pole

I saw a comment recently start with "It's trendy now to hate on AI..." and thought that was really interesting.

On the one hand, they perceive the tide turning. Great.

On the other hand, they imagine it's just to look cool or something. Superficial. Rather than genuine, well-considered, criticism grounded in people's ethical orientation and other meaningful priorities.

It's fascinating to me that there are people who simply cannot imagine caring about the impact on others of our own choices and actions. Fascinating and also sad.

Instead, It'll be my first time going to #canfurence !
#dcfurs made me into a #furry two years ago, and I'll be celebrating with my first suit!
Meet Lumen the Lynx!

I'll have to take more pictures 😅

this package was last seen in Denver, on Wednesday. there have been no updates since then.

let’s just admit that, at this point, it is not showing up “before 9pm tonight”. you can just go ahead and update the estimate to “in transit”, like you always do, eventually.

I know that this breaks your delivery SLA, but I also know that you don’t give a shit and you know there’s nothing I can possibly do about it.

just let me move on.

Like my Mom, Owen Meany, and perhaps you, I don't believe in coincidences.

I'm late to the Ray Bradbury party, but he concluded "There Will Come Soft Rains" with a home assistant caught in a loop saying:

That story seems to foreshadow this past Tues & Wed when powerful people were threatened each other with weapons the story warned us about. I'm glad Bradbury was wrong about August 4th and 5th, 2026.
