Also, if you use GenAI for one part of your work, people will assume you used it for the whole thing. It cheapens all your work if any part of it is GenAI.

(Plus of course GenAI is innately immoral due to its environmental, social and political impacts.)

Graphic artists reach for it to make music over their videos

Writers use it to illustrate their articles

And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.

None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.

You don’t need an LLM in order to work with natural language. Intent classification and entity extraction are still solid methods for parsing inputs!

Here’s an example of how the DNS Kitchen “Super Duper Easy Mode” will work (except it’ll be in a browser; I’m just testing my parser in the terminal here). Just ~500 lines of PHP can understand requests related to all DNS record types. And no LLMs anywhere!

I just taught a software engineering course at a summer camp for students. And one of our intros was: “wou will get frustrated. Frustration is good, because it means you are learning the hard stuff!”

If you bypass that frustration with a shortcut, you will not learn the hard stuff.

All of my #basil work has thought me so much about language design and compilers (and my even earlier dabbling into doing an #intCode compiler for #adventOfCode)

So. I figured I’d surprise her with this sweater one day. I just need to somehow figure out her size and what colours she likes without actually asking her either 😅

The latter I can figure out from the amazing clothes she wears each day.
