OMG I hadn't even thought about this part, the sudden demand -- that's the kind of thing that crashes a grid HARD

Eric Holthaus @ericholthaus.com The problem with AI's energy use isn't just the truly enormous demand, it's the speed at which that demand surges on and off. It's the perfect recipe for massive power grid failures. Ketan Joshi @ketanjoshi.co · 25m "In a documented case in 2025, a single data centre's power demand jumped by 400% in a quarter of a second during an AI training run, faster than a gas turbine can physically respond" Great IEA video on data centre energy issues -> www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M3M...

Yesterday I started reading Brian Merchant's book ‘Blood in the Machine’ which is about the Luddite uprising in Britain in the early 19th century and its connections to present times and it is getting me a bit worked up

A black and white graphic depicting a two-headed hammer in black, upright as a capital T, where the head intersects with a black ring that intersects as well with the bottom of the hammer's handle. Horizontally in the head and vertically in the handle, reversed out in white bold text are the words 'Ludd's Hammer'. At the intersection of the ring and the handle is a 🚫 over black letters 'AI'. Within the ring in white text is the phrase 'These engines of mischief have been sentenced to die', which is a modified lyric from the traditional Luddite song 'The Triumph of General Ludd'. All of this has been rendered in a rough, grungified manner. Like it's rendered in smeared machine grease.

I'm going to write a blog post about this when I get home: at the AI exhibit nothing works. Chatbots that are supposed to be our friends and support our every decision lag into life, recite a canned joke, crash when asked whether it can access the internet. Claims that AI will make us more rational, solve disease and the rest of our problems are sandwiched between halfhearted stories of harm. Descriptions of technology with no positive use case, only harm, but nonetheless inevitable and a technological marvel.

Next door, a history of MITs involvement with the Apollo program includes a section on the precision and skill needed to do something we thought was impossible: "everyone knew the software had to be as error free as possible."

That shit is SO unhelpful. Like if I'm looking back at git history, I don't care that a change was made roughly 3 months ago. I care whether it was made before or after an email I'm looking at that said something relevant to the change.

At the MIT museum. "Can we trust an AI pilot to fly in aerial combat" the text frames the problem as a technical challenge like any other. Predicting a high dimensional state space of pilot actions. An interactive exhibit, but broken. Unresponsive touchscreen. The voice of an AI assistant inviting to start the display chatters helplessly. The horror of algorithmic war needs tech support. We can't trust AI to run a museum exhibit, but we've already given it missiles.
