Occasionally news but that's just a few posts. I think I unfollowed most of the people who post news-related topics a lot.

Sometimes there's stuff about AI but it seems to be mostly of a tone I can psychologically handle. And I don't really think it's feasible or desirable to insulate myself from stuff about AI entirely, I mostly don't want AI posts to trigger me into a doom spiral

Incidentally, I wish political/AI content got more CWs because that stuff can trigger

Debusine now supports debug symbol packages thanks to this year's Debusine GSoC project, debuginfod server.

The debuginfod server functionality was added to #Debusine so that it not only hosts -dbgsym packages, but also serves their debug symbols over the debuginfod protocol.

There's a concept called active ignorance where you choose to not accept or read evidence of a problematic person or community norm as you don't want to have to think about the harms and perhaps have to give it up.

It's why I'm irritated by the folks who are all no politics please, just the tech. Or that "Bob and Van" piece.

Who you accept in your community, who you choose to work with, especially if you excuse abusive behaviour damages a community more. We see you.

This really is getting exhausting. I created a mathstodon account in order to keep up with my friends, colleagues and the wider mathematical community, now it seems like not a day can go by without my feed being filled by discussion of some new AI related debacle...

These AI generated proofs and papers make me so depressed, and I pity the people who have made generating and digesting them their profession. Reading and writing mathematics is already so hard! It can take a very long time to understand and digest even a well-presented piece of mathematics, but that process is something I cherish, and I cherish the effort and care of the authors who have explained it to me so thoughtfully.

But what is there to cherish about AI written mathematics? I feel a kind of malaise setting over my mind when I try to imagine the process of endless skimming and correcting, the following of loose threads and poorly thought out arguments, all produced in unimaginable quantities. Is this really how we want to spend our lives?

I cannot believe that this is the environment which I am stepping into as I begin my PhD studies this month. I try to take some solace in the fact that the fields I am interested in require so much careful architecture that they are yet impenetrable by AI, by I don't know. I long for us to slow down and breathe, and I long for a kind of romanticism of careful thought and deliberation that I see in our past.

I'm not religious, so any notion of "seeing them again" is of little comfort.

Rather, I see them in myself.

When I feel compelled to buy strangers a meal at a convention, just so they don't have to worry about finances for a brief moment, mostly I'm doing that on a whim. And because it's a nice thing to do. And because my career affords me the privilege to ease others' burdens occasionally.

But also, because I remember Frisk. Both how he lived and how he died. His mourning his ex who died from drunk driving. His inheriting a small fortune while wishing he could trade all the money away for one more good day with his late grandmother. His dream of turning that windfall into helping furries. His dream cut short by medical issues caused by his earlier years of excessive alcohol use.

And remembering how I found out the news. His bf making Frisk's death all about him instead.

Sometimes, I feel hate, too.

I don't consider criticism hateful. Being told someone hopes I die of AIDS is hateful. Being told I'm going to burn in hell is hateful. Being told I deserve bad things happen, etc.

But the thing is, growing up with the early Internet, this isn't really a new phenomenon for me, y'know?

I don't think I recall a single moment of Internet usage before people expressed such sentiments towards me.

And, sure, "who cares?" is a valid thing to think about shitty people.

But,

I can't help but wonder where any of those people are today.

Do they still draw breath?

Do they still harbor such anger or contempt for me today? Despite all the years?

How many of them matured into kinder people? How many of them are I friends with now, neither of us knowing we crossed paths the years before?

How many of them choked on their own vile hatred years ago, and are no longer among the living?

The other day, I wanted to see if alcohol-free port existed. The top search link went to a page of the 20 best alcohol-free ports! Except none of them were port, they were all spirits (not even other fortified wines). The ‘AI’ summary described a fictional process for removing alcohol from port and had two citations, neither of which supported the claim. The next 30 pages were all LLM slop that talked about what port is for a long time before saying that there’s no alcohol-free version.

I have been using the web since the mid ‘90s and it has never been this bad. Anyone advocating for ‘AI’ is advocating for a future where this damage is spread to all facets of life.

"What can be learned from studying X?"

The answer to X itself can of course be one of the things learned in this process of study; but one can learn far more useful information besides, such as

* What are the main difficulties to overcome to resolve X?
* What new techniques can one discover in order to solve X?
* Why are existing techniques insufficient to solve the problem by itself?
* How does X relate to results in prior literature?
* Can one uncover new connections between X and other topics Y, Z, ...?
* What are some natural related or followup questions X', X'', ... to study?

Nevertheless, until recently the two questions were closely aligned, to the point where it was not really necessary to distinguish the two: the only practical route to solving a difficult problem was to first address many of the subquestions listed above. (1/3)
