What I realise is that I'm okay with people talking about current events if they either CW it, talk about something that relates to them personally, or at the very least says something interesting about the events at hand.

But if they're saying the same things everyone else is saying or saying something like "x happened, isn't that bad?" (or boosting the people everyone else is boosting) I quickly reach for the "mute/hide boosts" button.

In the long-term I need to find and/or make a client that supports proper filtering (tried a bunch of clients when I started GoToSocial but the one I'm on is the one I like most despite the lack of proper filtering interface).

I should probably extend the same courtesy when posting/boosting to my own feed

I think one thing that messes you up as an artist is that the style you have in your head is only rarely reflected by your style as it appears on paper. So your assessment of your art tends to be a lot more negative than the people who are only seeing it on the page and don't know what it's supposed to look like.

Like, I think in my head, my artstyle looks a lot like Jamie Hewlett, this combination of very iconic characters and very intricate objects, but that is not how I draw at all. Most of that is the basic fact that I'm no Jamie Hewlett, but even a version of me with all the skills in the world probably wouldn't draw like that cus of other quirks about my process.

I tend to favor lines that while they aren't always conspicuously chunky is still a bit too thick to do intricate lineart and my personality tends to push me towards a "keep it simple, stupid" sort of ethos even when the initial idea was a lot more intricate.

Definitely aren't ruling out more of a masking effect sort of artstyle as my skills improve, but it still is probably not going to look like what it looks like in my head, and I think there's a pretty good chance those mental images aren't as well-formed as I like to think they are anyway.

Like, if you can picture a bicycle in some detail, can you actually draw a functioning bike with no reference? Experiments have shown that most people can't, your mental model of a bike may feel clear in your head, but in practice there's a lot of handwaving done.

I keep thinking about Ursula Vernon trying to make interactive fiction for the first time and realizing that in fiction, you can get away with suggesting something by metaphorically hiding behind a bush and waving an okapi butt on a stick (Ursula Vernon has a way with words), but when you're making a game, you have to write the whole damn okapi and know how it works.

And like, that's basically the difference between your mental image and your art too, you're seeing the okapi butt on a stick, but you have to draw the whole okapi.

the local models discourse is always laughable to me. pre-ai piracy culture wasn't free of vice but by and large the community of people that stuck around and the prestige rewarded prosocial archive building. the early waves of what that look like for local models is... not great. the cost is much higher, not just grabbing a couple flash drives from walmart, and the endgame for the most prosocial groups are that we basically share finetunes of whatever comes our way from the information giants. old style piracy worked despite the intervention of capital - the configuration of power was such that anyone could rip a cd if they wanted to. the independent information communities that would be called 'piracy' for local models can only exist with the support of capital with the unimaginable costs of training, finetuning, and hosting the models.

the simplest answer to "what about local models" is that "it stops being a marginally profitable thing for the information giants to do to undercut each other and becomes a permanent underclass pressure-release valve that is just far enough behind the frontier models to not pose a threat to potential profitability but reduces the appearance of monopoly." there could be some kind of pirate local model independence sect that cluster computes smaller domain-specific models, that could be rad, but so far i'm not seeing anything like that emerging, local model communities are gross and minimally generative.

What a company does when its ascending is not the same as what it might do when its threatened. If there was a serious labor law enforcement action, amazon is large enough to bring the country to its knees by delaying the deliveries people have grown dependent on for one day. What happens if any of these companies who have gained direct access into peoples whole lives need to show positive growth in a quarter. Google could juice ad sales by making people spend more time searching. What does a companywide "make people click 5% more affiliate links by any means necessary" look like when it comes through a 2nd party portal where someone believes the AI is their wife, or it is the thing keeping them employed.

The horror that people felt with "some people spend 10 hours a day online" was one where people are spending 10 hours a day with other people, even if through a tiny little pipe. Replacing that with spending 10 hours a day with a concentrated sycophancy superhuman drip is not the same thing. The kind of nightmares from "information bubbles" like incel forums and 4Chan look like nothing when you shrink the bubble to one. At least fringe movements could be observed in some way because they had to pass from person to person.
