this is an extremely important read, even if you don’t care about the Rust game engine Bevy.
anti-AI policies are broadly popular, and pro-AI policies destroy communities. this article is an excellent summary of a project going from an apparent (but not actual) anti-AI stance to a pro-AI one, on the false pretenses that AI boosters were subject to harassment and witch hunts. those false pretenses are already common, and you’re going to see them a lot more soon because this is a playbook.

I went to school with a bunch of self proclaimed rednecks who plastered the confederate battle flag on everything. They were fond of the phrase "heritage, not hate" which they used to mean "I want to use the symbolism of hatred, while being free from consequences."
These guys, usually, didn't know much about the history of the army who's battle flag they loved, and were, as a rule, pretty horrifically racist in ways big and small.
So when I see the rails chucklefuck talking about "Heritage is our duty" I just see the smiling face of the violent bigots that beat me and my friends for "race mixing."
And when I see him say "you're somebody now" ... I guess that's it's own post.

Yes, a thousand times this. There is no AGI or SkyNet lurking around the corner.

I don't know if the final line - "You are somebody now" - of DHH's "Omarchy Doctrine" is *intended* to have this connotation, but the first thing that popped into my mind is the final stanza of a poem written by the Danish resistance fighter Morten Nielsen, published posthumously in 1945. Here is my (poor, non-rhyming) translation. I've taken the liberty of capitalizing the interesting bit.
Fast bright voices, whirling into the blue
you were miserable, Fatty, but we couldn't understand
Sweaty and fat and stupid, Hell leapt forth
to knock over you and your bike; we stood around laughing. You sat on the front bench - never cry, just stare, stare, stare
when a frightened and funny substitute asks you to add two and two
middle school subs saved a fraying discipline
by turning it all against you, who defenselessly became a joke. When springtime came, for us who were 15 years old
and the trees stood shining over the girls' soft hair
and you came, cautiously and sincerely,
the one who laughed the loudest of us, was her it was all about. Now revenge is yours! You wear shoulder strap and jackboots
you raise your arm, a light shines in your pale blue eyes
for a human being can take hatred, mockery and threats, but never - no, never! - being laughed at.YOU ARE SOMEBODY NOW, Fatty, man and party member.
And should we go to the wall one day, your hand will be ready
Ready to smash your brass knuckles into my mouth when you strike.
And now you're out to kill, Fatty, all the cruel years.(I think every Danish schoolkid still learns it. DHH is almost exactly my age, so he certainly did.)

I've been hearing a lot of people say of late that the web sucks now because you can't find anything by searching, because all that comes up is AI slop.
This is true, and enormously frustrating. But make no mistake: when you search on things and can't find them, that's not the web sucking per se. That's SEARCH sucking.

The website is misleading in a way is skillful and subtle - the way you would think things would work is that the simulation actually worked at the task level, like actually having a mixture of tasks modeled within a worker. Thats a very different kind of model than the macro model they've done here. The thing in the paper is a lot more like "let's construct an equation that always goes up" than "let's simulate what the world could work like and observe the results"

alright, so, I feel like probably switching to Twisted is going to start paying off in a big way here soon (other than the simplicity of using Klein and being able to integrate existing `asyncio` stuff into) because I wasn't quite sure how I was going to handle scheduling and doing backup work (adding scraped results to the database, etc)
aaaand yeah, it looks easy as fuck: https://docs.twisted.org/en/latest/core/howto/time.html
mostly I just need background tasks to handle updating the database and *potentially* checking for new things and firing off one-off tasks and it seems those are both built right in. niiiiice.
