if any of you are mypy fans (I have heard _mainly_ from those who are not, but I assume some lurkers are) and have the energy for a bug report, this commit reliably causes an infinite-loop hang for me https://github.com/glyph/OmniFocusStreamCounter/commit/454d0727363595b770cb150cc08a0018bc04a783

If you want to understand why autism is a disability and not just a quirk or a difference, reread this quote until the words find a permanent home in your brain.
"Human beings reinforce social norms by hurting people who break them."
"Human beings reinforce social norms by hurting people who break them."
"Human beings reinforce social norms by hurting people who break them."
This happens every. Single. Day.

Captain Sully (of miracle on the Hudson fame) has been diagnosed with Alzheimers.
The former US Air Force fighter pilot from California said in a post on his website on Tuesday that his Alzheimer's diagnosis "has challenged what it means to be of service" and that he has found "the answer is to speak up" about the disease.
he has some advice for us all as well
Over the years, when people would ask about the successful outcome of Flight 1549, I would say that 'courage can be contagious,' and on that day it helped everyone band together to get everyone off that airplane successfully

Here's an open question for Fedi: So much of life involves trying to do things where you have some control over the outcome but not a lot. Jobhunting, for example. I can make applications and learn skills and network but at the end of the day someone has to offer me money in exchange for services and they could just say no for pretty much any reason. It's so easy to jump between extremes of trying to control everything (not possible) and giving up entirely. How the hell do you navigate this sort of uncertainty?

@glyph I propose introducing the Metric Light-Second as the standard definition of both distance and time. Lack of convenient overlap means you don't even need to specify unit. So by this standard a Nano is approximately one foot, a micro is about a third of a kilometer, a deci is about the cirucmference of the earth, a hecto is about two minutes and a kilo about 15, a mega is about 11 days, a giga is about 30 years, and all we'll need to do is introduce a new SI prefix for 10^7 for convenience.
uh oh even this is AI discourse, oops
I do not have sufficient confidence in my threat-modeling skills to say for sure that it shouldn't be, though, so I will keep doing things the old way, pretending like anyone with a frontier LLM and a few tens of thousands of dollars to blow on a demo of how many exploits they can find would not also be able to find it in a few minutes
the annoying thing here is that this is a mildly interesting fix, but like everything in the slopsec era, it's like… technically a mistake, that is technically related to security, but it's also just kind of a general hardening thing that I don't *think* should need to be embargoed?
so okay how does one vaguepost about an embargoed security fix, in such a way to keep oneself engaged in the problem at hand. would it be like, um, hey fellas, did you ever have, like, a program. on a computer. and it had a problem in it?

For folks who have been interested in #Canimus and #FederatedStreaming, I'm working on a revised specification that cleans up a lot of the problems that emerged during its development. It's also probably changing names, the current best candidate being "Chorus." (The repo name will change after the draft is finalized.)
Check out the WIP rewrite at https://github.com/PlaidWeb/Canimus/tree/draft/chorus-rewrite and please comment on it at https://github.com/PlaidWeb/Canimus/pull/19
