The "who benefits from the doubt?" question has a paper trail. The API has run anti-EV messaging since 1967. Koch-funded groups planned $10M/year campaigns. AFPM dropped $10M+ on "Don't Ban Our Cars" ads in 2024 swing states.

These people aren't the future. They never were. It should have been incredibly obvious that they were scum, mere betrayers and exploiters of #science and #technology.

While I do think that it's a scandal there's no general understanding of the sciences in U.S. #media and #journalism—and I'll go so far as to suspect that a number of top-level journalists are functionally illiterate, only able to communicate in slogans and jargon and simple charts—it should not have been necessary for @arstechnica or @newscientist or @TheEconomist or ANY big news outlet to be scientists in order to notice that Elon Musk wasn't what his marketing campaign said he was.

I was writing earlier about the great "Western" monomyth, their unifying story that explains why the Universe exists and what humans are supposed to do here. It's pertinent here because adherence to the monomyth is roughly equivalent to what the prevailing culture of the United States thinks of as being a good and civilized person. It's all the various tenets of Christofascist "patriotism" distilled into a single heroic fable whose nucleus is the Roman tale of Cincinnatus.
