Experimental feature for Visible Zorker: search bar in the source pane.

You can search for the names of routines, objects, globals, and constants, as well as the contents of printable string. It's not a full-text search (it only finds where things are declared, not used) but still handy for poking around.

Let me know how it works. Once it's solid I'll deploy it for all the other games.

Part of the ZIL source code for Zork 1. A search box in the top right displays search results for “axe”: the AXE object, the AXE-F routine, and a bunch of game messages that mention the troll’s bloody axe.

This is why a truly critical AI literacy must peel back the layers of human sense-making and investigate its interactional foundations. When we do so, we must walk a fine line. We must be prepared to deal with disenchantment without falling into the trap that casts all magic as naïve or obsolete. There always will be a place for enchantment and mystery. Divination and other generative uses of chance have served us as technologies of decisionmaking and sources of entertainment from timeeimmemorial. But magic appropriated by extractive capitalism and administered as the final technosolution is a different beast altogether. As Dami en Williams has noted, “the present magic of “AI” is performed on us without our input, without our knowledge, and without our consent. There’s another word for that kind of magic; binding, subjugating magic performed on you against your will is called a curse.” (Williams 2023:108). One of the goals of critical AI literacies is to give people the tools to lift that curse.

@pluralistic @owa So the "Beware of Dog!" sign gets repainted every year, shrink-fitting ever tighter to the profit-generating ethical compromises that underpin both Apple's monopoly over the digital spending of wealthy users and the self-preferencing mistreatment of independent developers necessary to sustain it.

Our phones could work for us as often as they work against us, but that's not possible while Cupertino big-foots smartphone profits and Google remains free to abuse the other 80%.

@pluralistic @owa There have always been logically consistent ways to achieve the goals of user safety and privacy, but each one would require giving up profits that Cupertino values more than any of its stated principles. E.g.:

- remove unsafe APIs and sensors from iPhones, or:
- disallow all third-party software, or:
- disallow all browsers and web technology

Each would address the root causes of the issues Apple claims to address but does not, in practice, manage.

@pluralistic @owa Apple's against that safer, more user-respecting alternative for obvious reasons, so they've gone to extraordinary lengths to hobble every iOS browser and keep web apps from taking off, including ongoing process skulduggery within the W3C and sponsoring fake astroturf "developer" groups like ACT (dba "The App Association") to gaslight regulators.

Its a *lot*.

Your regular reminder that Apple's chronic under-funding of the "Beware of Dog!" process combines with Cupertino's fundamentally unsafe platform APIs to create a situation in which either abuseware is tacitly allowed, or app reviews aren't just capriciously high-handed, but also take forever.

A better alternative in every dimension are safe-by-default, open platforms like the web.
