Can anyone recommend a journalling app? Preferred: cross platform (though can be web, as long as it sends a notification to remind me to do it) as I prefer typing on my keyboard at my PC but have photos etc. on my iphone; reminders to journal; prompts of some kind (I am bad at thinking about what to write); maybe something like which book I'm reading, how I'm feeling, little tidbits like that (not sure if this is something these do). Info on weather? Anyway recs please!!

Cadence and timing matters for self-care! When you're an intellectualizer (which I suspect if you follow me you are), it's easy to want to chase the feeling of "productivity" even in recovery from events!

I’m upset because I’ve been played like a fool.

Because Federico has decided to fully return MacStories to X without telling anyone involved with the site whatsoever (apart from John Voorhees). No post on the site, no text message (I’m the one who messaged him after I found out on Mastodon), nothing in Slack, nothing in the newsletter either, so nothing for their Club MacStories members who also had to find out elsewhere. And nothing to me, Chris or Matt who are hosting a weekly podcast published on MacStories

Yet in 2022, when they decided to leave X, they let the world know (https://www.macstories.net/news/macstories-is-on-mastodon-with-its-own-server/) with the following words, along with the launch of their Mastodon instance:

In 2025, they reiterated when they left Meta’s platforms. A few months after that, Federico messaged us when he wanted to resume posting to Threads and Instagram. A nicety he wasn’t bothered to extend today, in 2026, because he knew the opposition that returning to X would raise.

It’s not like this has come out of nowhere, either. Remember a few months back when it was the main headline for a full week that Tim Cook had been to the Melania screening with Trump and all of his friends just hours a U.S. Border Patrol officer gunned down Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti? (https://theintercept.com/2026/01/27/apple-tim-cook-trump-alex-pretti/) You’d think that would be a priority piece of news to cover on a site covering all things Apple. Yet for many hours Federico simply refused to do so. When asked, he replied to me that he did not want to risk getting stopped at the border the next time he’d enter the US because he criticized Trump on his publication (what a journalist). To make everyone think you have hard lines, integrity and values, including when it comes to running your business, only to backtrack in this way, just so you can grow your audience among the AI crowd on Elon Musk’s platform — Seems to me like Federico is exhibiting grifter behavior, at very least in that regard.

So yeah, I’m upset because I was holding him in higher esteem, and because I believed him when he used to take a stance. But whatever, in the end he’s a white tech bro like the rest of them. He was woke when being woke used to be good business. Now AI & fascism are in vogue, and so that’s where he’s pointing his sails.

Folks like me who aren’t white, aren’t cis, aren’t entitled men, we should be getting used to seeing our pretend allies flapping their wings away, because it’ll keep happening. I’ll be moving on now.

I was trying to work out yesterday why LLM users annoy me so much and it came back to my basic notion of rudeness: impolite behaviour stems from assuming that your time is worth more than other people's.

If someone doesn't bother to write coherent words in a message to you so that they can type faster at the cost of your comprehension speed, they're trading your time for theirs and that's rude.

If someone uses an LLM to create more words from fewer ideas, that saves them time in careful expression at the cost of more work for you. That's rude.

If someone uses an LLM to write code that doesn't work and expects other people to help debugging it, then they're saying that it isn't worth their time to learn but it is worth your time to help them. That's rude.

If someone uses an LLM to write some code that looks like it works and expects you to put effort into reviewing a PR, again, they're saving work for themselves at the expense of your time. That's rude.

Almost all LLM uses are like this: they save the user time (at least, in the short term) by making more work for someone else. They're machines optimised for creating rudeness.

There are a bunch of places where you do trade different people's time. In particular, if tasks A and B need doing, but person 1 can do either and person 2 can do only task B, then it makes sense for person 2 to do task B so that person 1 can do task A. That's not because person 1's time is more valuable, it's because person 1 doing task A is more valuable. It's not that tour time is not more valuable than the cleaner's time, but the cleaner doing their job means that you can spend my time doing more valuable tasks.

@cwebber That is probably part of the motivation for Amazon’s destruction of history and knowledge. Once Amazon has feed the book to their machine, shredding it makes it harder for humans and other LLM selling companies to independently obtain or buy a copy. The end goal is inescapable subscription reliance and towards a more rent and subscription economy.
