anyway, when we recognize that we need to make a decision on aesthetics, some of those are harder than others. we've been programming long enough that often our emotional reaction does provide an immediate, short-term guide.

this was a case where we needed a little time to detach from our feelings slightly, so that we can view them from a distance to see the big picture, separate the fundamental ones from the spurious ones. (yes, this ties into Buddhism.)

what we want to point out is that many of those are the same things that are part of the actual flowchart, the one where aesthetic judgement is the last resort, all the way at the bottom. a lot of the time, the prioritization is clear because the issue is simple enough to allow it.

aesthetics are the emotional tool we use when reason has reached its limit, when we are no longer able to state the full argument for a decision in words.

beauty is a surprisingly complicated concept. there's a lot of things that go into it. in the context of code, simplicity, readability, ease of maintenance, those are all part of it, but so are things like having pleasant surprises and drawing connections across distant topics.

yeah, okay, so a day or two ago we laid out a couple directions we might take the Evocation hex transform to get the really substantive details of the code it's transforming into its output. there's a few different ways that would all work.

we said at the time (less eloquently) that our usual priority-resolution process for the various virtues code can have had reached the bottom of the flowchart, requiring us to make an aesthetic judgement

But to answer your question... there are other ways to detect slop. If you see an author committing thousands of lines of code a day, you know something's fishy. If the code is full of duplicate implementations, or boilerplate no sane person would write, well...

I've wanted to build a mixed-script Korean input method for more than ten years, and I finally started building it.

The project is called Bibim. Korean, Japanese, and Chinese share a lot of Sino-derived words written with Chinese characters, even when the readings differ. Bibim uses those characters as the bridge: if you're writing Japanese and can't remember the Japanese reading of 博物館 (“museum”), you can type the Korean reading (bangmulgwan) instead, and it will recover the characters for you.

I finished the design doc today. If you're into CJK writing systems, East Asian languages, or input method development, I'd love feedback.

The studio portrait group I am a part of has begun again after the summer break. I was going into it with the ambition to look more and try to deepen my observation and experience with the model instead of continuously refining the painting’s resolution as it were. It looks rough, but I am pleased with the result, it reflects more what I saw and felt than when I started the piece.

Someone talks about the increased censorship of big platforms, someone else jumps in to tell them they should use some tiny open-source alternative and then it turns out the first person is either already doing that or it would be economically infeasible for them to do so.

It happens all the time and not once have I seen anyone consider that maybe someone who is evidently fully aware of how awful big media platforms are and who's already demonstrated a willingness to move off commercial social media (i.e. they are on fedi in the first place) have already looked into the alternatives and judged what is feasible for them without needing some rando to tell them that.
