So my view is that whatever worst case scenario you could imagine under malevolent artificial intelligence, exists today. The "life part" is fashy billionaires. The "capability part" is today's crop of ML systems. For most of humanity, we're already there.

Fashy billionaires already don't make decisions that prioritize humanity. The only thing that would change if malevolent AI developed on silicon, is that ~100 fashy billionaires would suddenly find themselves on our side of the fence. 🤷🏿‍♂️

In addition to monitoring activists in the vicinity of Anthropic executives and keeping tabs on protests near physical Anthropic assets, the firm is also implementing a “pre-crime” approach, attempting to predict incidents before they happen. In some cases, that also means reporting suspects to police before a crime occurs."

@glyph When my workplace started requiring me to use them, I took the position that this was the psychological and cognitive equivalent of having to work with hazardous materials - but since there was no guidance, I cobbled together some usage patterns based on what people I know and trust have done. Mostly I tried very hard to avoid the "slot machine mechanic", because I have OCD, and there is a very good reason I have avoided anything that even resembles gambling throughout my life.

I don't think I've become dumber. I've avoided vibecoding entirely; I've taken the approach that the machine can make comments and suggestions, but I write the code and I make the decisions. (those two are, for me, very closely connected.)

But I do think my mental health in general has cratered. My depressive bouts have become more frequent and intense. I'm constantly anxious and on edge. I'm *exhausted* when I come home from work, to the extent that even "dumb" activities like playing video games is more than I can handle.

And I've gotten addicted, like I knew I would. Even though I detest LLMs and the AI industry, I now find myself *compulsively* chatting with bots, even if I hate doing so and would wish I didn't.

I'm so, so tired of this.

Has the AI situation gotten markedly worse for you this week?

Specifically: has something happened in your personal or work life, like a mandate to use LLMs at work, or a relative developing an obvious chatbot dependency, to make your own situation worse?

Or have you learned new information from a public source, like social media or a newspaper, that you didn't previously know which is worse?

Boosts for reach appreciated.

Patrick Danville, the magical artist, draws the door into existence. Note the 2 brushes on the doorknob. The marks of the tire treads on the ground are a callback to Susannah’s trike, depicted in another painting THE DARK TOWER: KA-TET.

In a mournful pose, the last gunslinger sits with head in hands. The earth under him is marked with tire treads. His shadow falls on a freestanding wooden door marked with a plaque reading "The Artist" in stylized script. Two paintbrushes cross to form an X on the doorknob.
Detail from THE ARTIST’S DOOR featuring Roland sitting cross legged with head in hands. His cowboy hat is hand stitched. His head dips, and the long ends of a dark handkerchief tied at his neck fall on the back of his light gray shirt. His gun is holstered at his hip and the brass heads of bullets wind around the back of his waist.

Close detail of the yellow and brown woodgrain of a door. At the top is a sign with cracking paint that reads”The ARTIST.” On the lower left a doorknob marked with the X of two crossing paint brushes sits on a metal plate rusted and peeling.

I think the important thing to remember about science and engineering research is that even if we perfectly understood the rules of reality (we don't, and probably never can) we still wouldn't know all the implications of those rules. The laws of physics seem to allow for practically infinite combinations of stuff. We simply do not know what is possible.

So even if you don't value knowledge for the sake of knowledge, you still shouldn't laugh if someone wants money to study, like, parrot intestines, or slime molds, or rocks, or stare at an empty patch of sky with a radio telescope, or just seeing what happens if you mix a bunch of random chemicals. The universe's possibility space is so wide that it is impossible to know ahead of time what will turn out to be "useful".

So if a passionate and knowledgeable nerd wants to explore something silly, the right decision is to give them money and a pat on the back.

The European Union have deadline for public responses about generative AI and the arts on the 11th of September.

Artists and people who care about art. Let your voice be heard before then if you haven't already.

PS: If you aren't from the EU but would like a story about displacement and harm in the arts to come forward I'm making a document to send in today or tomorrow.

Please share the story with a link to a source below.

When reading about these companies and these ventures it seems very much like money isn't real.

But for most people, money is very real. I have this theory about the cognitive capacity allocated to financial decisions.

A person like me shopping at Dollar General for groceries makes many financial decisions and thinks about how to allocate money with far more care than Nvidia does when trying to find a place to park their obscene glut of cash.

Smart economic decisions make markets work.

Screenshot of Brownie Cove Cancelled by Sand Gardeners, where I did the art. It's a crunchy, dithered scene of an airport lobby with pink walls and a checkered floor. There are withered stick figures roaming around, and the lobby is full of gravestones. There are small, distorted text boxes over some of the characters, but I can't quite make out what they say on the image preview.
Screenshot of my game This, Too, Shall Pass. It's very stylized and illustrative, a landscape, very thick fog. There is some rain, a grassy ground and a few pink cherry trees are visible. In the center of the image is an unsettling statue with a very wide head, holding a glowing orb
Screenshot of my game Buto. It's stylized and also quite illustrative. It's a landscape with a European style village on the far side of a wooden bridge. There is a large red mountain in the background. The bridge goes over a river of yellow flowers, and the foreground is covered in lush green grass. Amidst the grass is the head of a little bug guy, the titular Buto.
