Like, I'm quite bad at anyything related to music or rhythm. This makes me not fun at many types of social events.

I also miss a lot of pop culture references. Hell, I haven't seen most of the furry-bait movies or TV shows that have come out in the past decade or so, despite them being hot topics in the fandom. Sometimes this makes me miss jokes in ways that kill the vibe.

I'm quite bad at flirting. I'm quite bad at recognize when I'm being flirted with. I suspect these two observations are, in fact, the same observation.

My sense of humor (puns!) can annoy the hell out of some people.

But, y'know? Take it or leave it. You're entitled to a refund, but nobody paid to listen to me. :P

• The solution to the "devs are rolling their own crypto" problem isn't to scold them, but to give them better tools that solve their problem correctly and get out of their way.

If it wasn't clear from a lot of my writing in recent years, I think a lot of the harm inflicted on society comes from the following ideas:

• That social hierarchies are a desirable thing rather than a phantasm caused by looking at socially constructed variables rather than embracing diversity
• That parasocial interactions are worthwhile
• That the convenience of centralization is worth the downsides

The most suspicious things that AI boosters say are not the positive things. They're the apparently negative things. The AI broke containment. The agents set up a message board to secretly conspire. Or the most egregious, that the AI will become Skynet and kill us all. As @pluralistic says, it's part of the scam, the fearmongering is aimed at investors, who want to invest in a growing industry. AI needs to be perceived as growing, even if that growth is supposedly a threat.

we figured out that almost all the runtime was going to the log-load transform, and almost all the problems that require debugging are in the label transform. so we commented out the call to the log-load transform for the sake of rapid testing, but to be sure we fixed things, we have to do full runs.

a bunch of them are overflows of the substring entry stack; we can fix those by increasing the stack size. it currently only allows three entries, so it's no surprise it overflows. we want to know how many it actually needs, so, time to increase it one by one...

we learned C on Mac System 7 as teenagers in the 90s. those machines did not have memory protection. writing a byte to the wrong place wouldn't kill your program, it would corrupt its data structure, or, worse, the OS's. so we're old hands at this sort of thing, though there are good reasons people find it intimidating. it's really nice to feel like we still have those skills.

@soatok @baralheia What's particularly interesting to me is that he overcame his instinct to say "fuck politics". Because i get it, it fucking sucks, it is like chewing glass to discuss politics, especially with people who "just want to have fun". But he understood that's not possible. It takes a lot of effort to say these things out loud and it is so important that we do.
