oh, we also tested an idea about how to present labels, and it wasn't great but helped us think more about alternatives. adding a metadata entry for every label reference adds significantly to the runtime, so we really are going to want that hash table ASAP once this works, and we're leaving them for last among the cosmetic issues so we can have faster testing until then.
