In commodified discourse, I believe the title of this substack post would be "AI companies may not have created god, but have they created the devil?" and then you can imagine the yellow/red YouTube thumbnail that follows. The technologies of an older information war

The stories of people getting lulled into parallel dimensions and doing unimaginable things is only going to get grimmer and its only by the grace of wealth that it wont appear like the information conglomerates are not responsible

What a company does when its ascending is not the same as what it might do when its threatened. If there was a serious labor law enforcement action, amazon is large enough to bring the country to its knees by delaying the deliveries people have grown dependent on for one day. What happens if any of these companies who have gained direct access into peoples whole lives need to show positive growth in a quarter. Google could juice ad sales by making people spend more time searching. What does a companywide "make people click 5% more affiliate links by any means necessary" look like when it comes through a 2nd party portal where someone believes the AI is their wife, or it is the thing keeping them employed.

A critical mass of people with an infinitely personalized stream of information about the world is so much broader of a nightmare than the future people imagine with "what if AI takes the jobs." Algorithmic ad markets might be oversold because they still rely on some kind of "unitized" information. There is "a link" in the search results, "an ad break" in the video. But the continuous surface where someone learns to trust some abstract text box absolutely is so much more powerful than that. There is a reason the body of capital is having a seizure for this technology.

The horror that people felt with "some people spend 10 hours a day online" was one where people are spending 10 hours a day with other people, even if through a tiny little pipe. Replacing that with spending 10 hours a day with a concentrated sycophancy superhuman drip is not the same thing. The kind of nightmares from "information bubbles" like incel forums and 4Chan look like nothing when you shrink the bubble to one. At least fringe movements could be observed in some way because they had to pass from person to person.

there's the obviously pathological stories called "AI psychosis" but also a bit quieter are stories of people who have been using 2nd party wrappers without as corporate-friendly system prompts, confessionals about spending 10 hour days on the thing. The longer tail of people who can balance being in a parallel informational reality with 12 quantum AI wives and their day to day work.

There are 93,000 voting aged trans people in Texas.

They are 20x to 40x more likely to be Dems than GOP. Not a typo. Twenty to forty times more likely to vote Dem.

They are almost 10 ppts more likely to vote than cis people.

Some non-zero number will be discouraged by his Fox statement.

@emag The XScreenSaver collection has consistently been a glorious stress test of literally everything about the various video stacks for decades and it is frankly malpractice that it has not been a part of the QA pipeline of every hardware and "desktop" developer for decades. I'm going to be working on something like an Elements of Good Tech, which includes minimum requirements for a device, piece of software, or system to be considered good (as in not evil), and a list of personal responsibilities and universal principles that someone can promise to uphold, where you can actually check signatures (using public keys?). I think it is well past due. I'd like to work on this in an open source way. Anyone interested?

This is a space to put something out there, have it seen by someone else, and then let it vanish forever. It's temporary by design. I hope it offers something helpful to you today. 🎗️

I want everyone, especially journalists, to notice the silence of the tech execs about this. This includes people like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg whose recent blog posts talk about balancing the benefits and harms of "AI", and don't include Doomer scenarios among the harms.

They are complicit in the misinforming of the public. They are complicit in stoking everyone's fear. They reap the benefits of the Doomer narrative because it is their narrative.
