On interview questions:

A guy goes in for a job interview. His resume looks good, and it's going well, so the interviewer starts giving him some of the standard questions and gets to "What would you say your greatest weakness is?"

"Oh, that's easy - I'm too honest with people."

"I don't think that sounds like much of a weakness."

"I don't give a fuck what you think."

There is nothing “conservative” about either MAGA or the AfD, certainly not in the colloquial understanding of the term. They are at war with the very idea of a democratic society of equals, devoted to a project that is best described as a kind of aggrieved revanchism.

Third, for _most_ of the people who say this to me (direct coworkers excluded) I'm a *prominent* programmer, not necessarily a *good* one. You know about me because of my nano-celebrity status in the history of the development of modern async interaction patterns. There are lots of "better" programmers out there that just toil in obscurity. This is not a profession where quality (multivariate and complex as it is) corresponds to notoriety.

This goes double for Rob Pike or Linus Torvalds.

Second, the way you get to be a "good programmer" (on any one of the multivariate axes upon one can be such a thing) is to practice a lot, and AI deprives you of practice. So it might be momentarily helping you to *avoid embarrassment* but you're basically just bluffing your way through a situation, not really producing "better code" in that situation.

First, there's no such thing as a "good programmer". Programming skill is not a scalar where we all compete with each other. It's a complex multi-factor ability with a lot of nuance in how it's measured. Domain knowledge matters a lot.

It's also highly situational. I have had career experiences where I went from a top-tier first-percentile all-star contributor to a bottom-rung barely-hanging-on loser shipping slowly if at all, because I moved teams. It really depends what I'm working on.

This is a thing that people say to me with surprising regularity to me, too. "But you're such a *good* programmer, glyph, that's why you don't see the value in AI. It helps with reversion to the mean, which means that for below-average folks it's great."

I think it is important to reject the premise here.

This AI doomerism is completely misplaced. I hate AI. In its current form it’s inherently unethical. But I’m not afraid that it becomes conscious and wants to kill us all. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly owned by your CFO who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on six more.

This is about AI.

We worked tremendously hard on this release and it shows. Security improvements are a headline feature I’m really proud of.

The Sniper Elite franchise is currently on sale on Steam.

The most recent game in the series (Sniper Elite: Resistance, 2025) is marked down to $20, which is nothing to write home about. But the two games before that (2017's Sniper Elite 4 and 2022's Sniper Elite 5) are 90% off; that puts 4 at $6 and 5 at $5. Those are screaming deals for the amount of gameplay those games provide.
