@glyph in what I hope is the worst* recommendation in your feed today:

I met someone recently who uses LuaTeX to manage all their invoices.

The invoice doc is composed almost entirely in LaTeX, and there's just enough Lua in there to pull the latest component prices from a stock database, and store any side-effects that need storing. The PDF is guaranteed to have accurate prices at the time of invoice generation, and invoice time is also when the stock DB gets updated.

I think they were using it for managing stock/invoicing for bathroom remodelling.

*But hopefully at least a bit entertaining.

Cory keeps becoming a main character on here because he responded to some fairly predictable pushback on his use of LLMs by first telling his critics they weren’t socialist enough (offensive to me for both obvious and less obvious reasons), then by accusing AI critics of engaging in purity culture. the latter accusation is still used by AI boosters, because of Cory. I saw a ridiculous amount of guilt on my feed from AI critics who like Doctorow and didn’t understand that he was just name-calling.

Charlie, I respect you and your work. sincerely, please help me out here. am I meant to be nice to a guy who does the above openly? I have no particular desire to be the bigger person here.

WOW, new finds from the Ice Age! Two absolutely stunning Ice Age figurines from the Swabian Jura were found, dating back around 40,000 years.

I need an invoicing solution.

I want something that can send emails, schedule reminders, nicely format PDFs, and has a well-documented API for uploading line items from time tracking.

I've used Stripe invoicing for this in the past, but in the situation where one has clients that use *other* payment mechanisms, IME this creates annoying reconciliation gaps.

Any recommendations?

A big thank you to everyone who has started discussions / reaching out / testing patches.

I've updated the AI removal patch to purge a few more files that I missed the first time around.

There is also a new patch, that removes the newtab sponsor heavy/widgety home (808 files , 420419 deletions)

There is also a PR open to document testing instructions for the curious.

And I've opened some issues for discussions to each patch to collect any feedback from testing / open questions etc.

This week, something reminded me of a weird experience I've had over the years.

I was probably intending to blog about it at some point, but it's a difficult topic to cover without sounding weirdly self-congratulatory, and I kind of hate that tone. I dunno, maybe it's from years of working in tech? :V

One of the hazards you'll face if you share any of my hobbies or interests is other people--well-meaning, honest, and usually very kind people--praising your apparent "intelligence".

This has also come up a few times indirectly, where friends would be like, "So I asked my [very technically respected] friend about you, and they said cryptography is only for mega-geniuses."

This sort of experience, however it manifests, makes me feel uncomfortable for many reasons.
