I am a radical in many ways by society’s standards, I’m sure — my ideas of goodness and universal liberation are apparently off the map — but I’m not one of these people who longs for destruction. At heart I’m not a revolutionary, but an engineer.
Destroying things is easy. Building things is hard. And the certitude that we will actually get a better society by destroying the current one first? I don’t buy it. That’s the foolish myth of the greenfield rewrite turned into a social theory.
So when I agree with the QP at the top of the thread, don’t misunderstand me: my agreement is not a wish. It’s a warning.

And to be clear, I’m not excited about the possibility of all that violence. I don’t like living in a world where disputes get resolved by murder — even if it’s the murder of truly despicable people. I mean, I’d like to see these technofascists cut down to size just as much as anyone else, but I’d rather that happen in a way that is thoughtful and just. For all its flaws, I still prefer the rule of law, the rule of ever-less-violent social consensus over the rule of violence. I would rather live in a world where we are always making the structures of our society less violent, less coercive, and more just.
I want that. Alas, that is not the direction the world is heading.

Liza's correct.
It’s easy to hear this as a threat, but I don’t think that’s quite correct. It’s just…a fact. To the extent that there is some sort of wall between industry and government, between the market and the state, that is •protection• for the wealthy against violence.
When people don’t believe democracy can hold oligarchs accountable, that's when you get Luigi Mangiones.
When people don't believe that unions or labor law will realistically protect them, that’s when you get violent worker uprisings.
And when militaries believe that specific corporations are functioning as arms of other militaries, well, when Liza said.
Oligarchs now are drunk with consolidation of power, but aren't really thinking through the personal consequences.
