Obvious in retrospect, but it would have saved hours of fiddling if I'd realised tailscale was still up on one of the hosts I was trying to drag race with iperf3. Turns out some new networking gear *is* working great! 2.5GbE FTW.
What eventually set me on the right path was noticing the MTU getting negotiated well below 1450 when passing `--verbose`

I know being in software is just so exhausting right now, but I'm taking this as a reminder that we don't have to constantly be on the defensive and caught up into endless arguments
friends, if you're exhausted by arguing with boosters, please consider just stopping that completely once you realize what's happening and changing gears to work with people you've already identified as allies; there is so much work we still need to do if we are going to preserve "software that actually works and can be understood" in the coming years

After we played, @jutekja shared this wonderful comment: Molly House is a non-capitalist board game. It does not stop you from optimizing your play, but it refuses to celebrate optimization. And it's very rare and special in that respect.
Many games with anticapitalist aesthetics struggle with that. A lot of the core systems that designers work with ultimately encourage players to seek growth, efficiency, and competition - regardless of the eco, anarchist, or communal setting and goals presented.
There is (I'm told) a developing field in game design to turn that around. I've seen a few games at the forefront of that movement, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing it develop.

I enjoy that in Balatro, the score is a float, so with a sufficiently broken setup you can score NaN. Furthermore, with a broken enough setup you can keep playing rounds until the score you have to hit is also NaN. At which point you must lose, because NaN != NaN. I just find it funny that two arguably bugs combine into forcing even the stupidest possible run to end.

Does anyone have a good and reputable youtuber/"content creator" who has an active discount code I should use?

EDIT: So far Veritasium has one for 20% off which I'll used this evening with my kid to sign up unless someone recommends a better discount and/or person to get the referral reward.

I've found Mastodon to be a really vibrant, exciting, engaging, diverse and inspirational platform. BUT, if a person doesn't interact with others on here, they will miss out on a lot!
It's definitely the best platform I've been a part of, because of the people here, the tools available, and the structure of the fediverse as a whole.
But... you DO need to engage to get the best experience.

i did a really simple and nice thing that is almost certainly not the final answer i will settle on - i have a single pool per thread of spare individually allocated cachelines to reuse for three kinds of queue object. for a cross-thread message queue, it can hold one message. for a thread-local queue, it can hold two and for a gin-local queue it can hold 3.
it's the thread-local queue i don't think it's right for. you can only store 2 of them in a node because entries are 3 pointers in size. gin queues are likely to remain extremely short in practice (in fact empty for most gins).
